CONCEPT
Developed by Escforescent, The Scent of Light is a performance that explores the ways in which light can be interpreted via sound and scent composition to create a unique synesthetic experience. It is an invitation to break away from the mundane, transcend the boundaries of human perception, and explore our profound and intertwined sensory capabilities. The musical program is conceptually inspired by the “sound” of light, comprised of solo piano works by composers Simeon Ten Holt, Molly Joyce, and John Adams and performed by pianist Justin Snyder. The program integrates scents crafted specifically for this experience by Detroit-based Sfumato Fragrances, which intermingle throughout the space in harmony with the soundscape. Deepening this immersive performance is a program-specific neon light installation that serves as an architectural backdrop and a physical representation of light.

LOCATION
Grand On River is an event space housed in a former bank building. A Detroit Savings bank branch was first established at the corner of Grand River and Warren in 1909. The original structure was replaced with the current building around 1927 and was actively used as a bank until the late 70’s. While the building was intermittently occupied, the building deteriorated over the years. The building includes the old bank vault which has been transformed into a lounge area, complete with a high-def sound system.
